Indonesian Supreme Court: Expanding access through court live streaming
- 05 July 2024
Introduction
The Indonesian Supreme Court (Supreme Court) is institution holding the highest authority over all branches of the judiciary in Indonesia: general, religious, military and state administrative courts. It has significant capacities, including:
- deciding on cassation application;
- resolving dispute on the authority to prosecute;
- reviewing court decision that have obtained permanent legal force (PK); and
- other supporting capacities provided by laws.
Each year, the Supreme Court publishes its annual report (Laptah) distributed at the beginning of the year. These reports comprehensively elaborating their work-related issues, including rewards, innovations, regulations, case handling, and internal operations. Laptah is freely accessible to the public here: MA - Laptah.
Innovative Application
In 2023, the Supreme Court introduced a dedicated website for live streaming of final court session, which can be accessed at https://court-live.mahkamahagung.go.id/. This platform aims to provide broader access to judiciary information and services. It features recordings of supreme court judges reading the verdicts of cassation and PK delivered by each of the five chambers.
Although the website currently lacks a substantial number of uploaded videos, this initiative shall be appreciated for its commitment to improving wider access to the judiciary and being transformative for the Indonesian legal system.
The Supreme Court’s initiatives to introduce court live streaming for the reading of the verdict demonstrate a significant commitment to enhancing public accessibility in Indonesian legal system and improving their internal operations and management through the involvement of technology.
